On 1st February 2023 Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, delivered her fifth comprehensive budget in the parliament. Budget 2023 placed a strong emphasis on increasing government capital spending, fiscal equilibrium, and appealing incentives and rebates under the new income tax system.
According to the FM the main focus is on the growth and development of India in all areas of the country. However, a rise in gold prices always benefits the government through increased tax revenue from the sales of gold.
As gold is a valuable commodity higher prices can lead to an increase in tax collected from the sales of gold, thereby providing a boost to governments revenue.
Furthermore, the rise in gold prices can also lead to an increase in the value of the country’s gold reserve, which will help in the national financial stability.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange the gold prices touched the new limits of ₹60,690 per 10 grams on (MCX). There is a hike in the custom duties of metal based materials such as gold bars. By the time Finance Minister started presenting the budget, the price of gold has set a new record of all time.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman also added that there will be no liable capital gains on conversion of gold into e-gold.
The Union Budget made a significant impact on the price of gold through various measures such as changes in import duties, taxes and other regulations affecting the gold market.
The government increased the import duties on gold to curb its which can lead to increase in gold price due to increased cost for importing metals.
Commodity market experts stressed the connection between the increase in gold prices and FM Sitharaman’s budget speech, stating that the budget proposals to raise the import duty on silver bars, dore, and other items to match that on gold and platinum caused the gold price to reach a new high today.
On the basis of the given article we can conclude that an increase in the price of gold is always seen as a hedge against inflation. It is the sign of a strong economy. Gold is undoubtedly seen as a safe-haven asset and its price tends to increase during times of economic uncertainty.
A rise in the price of gold can also increase the gold demand for gold related products and services, leading to increased revenue for the jewellery and bullion industries.
